Is Nitrux Ditching Plasma for Maui Shell? The Shocking Announcement and What it Means for the Future

When I first heard about the release of Nitrux 3.4.0, I was surprised to see that it came with the older KDE Plasma 5.27 instead of the newer Plasma 6, which has been the choice for many recent distro releases. As I dug deeper, I stumbled upon an announcement that explained the developers' decision and how it will impact Nitrux's future plans. Brace yourselves, because this news is big.

The Big Switch: From Plasma to Maui Shell

In a surprising turn of events, the team behind Nitrux has declared that they are moving away from Plasma and will make Maui Shell their default desktop environment starting from late 2024. This move will make Maui Shell the only DE option for Nitrux users.

If you haven't heard much about Maui Shell, it's because it's still in its early stages of development. However, a look at its GitHub repository shows that the project has been advancing steadily.

What to Expect with the Switch

Don't worry, the switch won't happen anytime soon. The Nitrux developers plan to use Plasma 5.27.x LTS release for the majority of 2024. However, they have decided to switch to Maui Shell because many of the widgets and plasmoids used in NX Desktop (Nitrux's customization layer for Plasma) will stop functioning with Plasma 6.

📋NX Desktop is a key element that sets Nitrux apart from other Plasma-based distros. The developers believe that it has served its purpose in enhancing Plasma's development. However, they assure that Nitrux will still use various KDE components like KDE Frameworks, Extra CMake Modules, and more.

Despite their decision, the developers are not opposed to providing a KDE Plasma 6 AppImage "for fun" to those who want to try it out with their Nitrux installation.
